Stuck in the Middle

Huh?  Stuck in the middle of what, you may ask.  Stuck in the middle of two groups that we love to pieces but do not feel like we belong in either.  You see, I very much dislike "names" and "classifications" and "cliques" of subgroups that take away from the larger group to begin with, and end up hurting the main goal and vision of the larger group.

I am a Catholic, born and raised that way, although mostly Catholic by name since we went to Mass when convenience allowed.  As a kid, I was very proud to share which faith I belonged to but never really had it in my heart.  Sure we prayed every now and then, but I never had a consistent prayer life and dependance on God.  My maternal grandparents took their five kids to church, and my mom did a beautiful job continuing this tradition on passing down the faith.  She did her very best to bring her own crew of kids to church all on her own, while my dad work 50/60/70+ hours a week to support us, although he was not the church-goer and kept his religious views to himself since it was a "personal matter".  They both planted the seeds of faith and watered them with a home of love and virtue.  To this day, all four of us girls are very active in our faith communities and strive to put God, virtue and love first daily.

Looking around and seeing the active members in my church where I grew up, I saw a common denominator.  Most of them had been on a renewal experience called Cursillo.  I wanted "that" - their joy, their confidence, their love of God that shone so brightly.  So I went as soon as I could!  When I made my Cursillo at the young age of 21, I was able to take all the intellectual learning (that I stuffed away after my Confirmation) to heart.  It helped bring it all to life and lit a fire of faith that has never been extinguished.  I now felt and understood the deep love Our Lord had for me in a whole new way, but I also understood the responsibility part.
"From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required."
~Luke 12: 48
I was now expected to live this faith, be obedient, share it and bring others to Christ, and continue on this journey daily to a Life in Christ through Piety, Study, and Action.

As we have grown in our faith, we have found that Cursillo isn't everything and *the* final answer.  Cursillo grounded us well and was that starting point to learn and grow in our marriage and living faithful lives to the teachings of the church.  We became active in our parish and another group, similar to Cursillo, called TEC (Teens Encounter Christ).  We noticed a difference as God kept sending us baby after baby as many people in our these communities would share that "they were done" and would tease us with "don't you know what causes that?".  We were confused and felt as if we didn't belong any more, even though we had been faithful to God and trusted Him with every part of our lives.  We just "stood out" now in this group and were now "too Catholic" to many in this community, but many shared how they wish they had our faith when they were our age.  It seems as many of them have become comfortable in their lives and "lukewarm" in their faith  And now we were standing out as the odd ducks.  Huh?  What?!!
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments."
~John 14: 15

Thankfully with the consistent study of our faith, we felt called to homeschool our growing brood.  We were introduced to those who hold a more traditional view of the Catholic faith.  Many of these families are large in number, just like us. So we finally felt a new sense of belonging.  Well, kind of..... As we came to know many of them, we saw and felt a negativity.  They were "too good" for others and seemed all too often to look for the wrong and sin in the world around them.  They knew their faith so well and lived it to a "T", but have built up walls around them so that those on the other side cannot approach them.  Many lack that love, virtue and humility because they are so consumed in the Law. Sadly, they remind me of the Pharisees.
"If I speak in tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal."
~1 Corinthians 13: 1

Neil and I love both of these groups but our heart breaks in seeing these differences.  Cursillo brought us to where we are today and we want to continue to the journey with these amazing people who struggle daily to live and find and love the truth, all at different steps along the way.  We also love our more traditional friends who challenge us and understand how hard it is to live up to the teachings of the faith in a world that is so "go with the flow".  But there is that gap of needing to keep going and needing to love and live virtue.  We need to find that middle ground where Law and Love are both expected and lived.  We need to be that bridge of Love without bending and breaking to the "winds of the world".
“As long as you live, you will be subject to change, whether you will it or not - now glad, now sorrowful; now pleased, now displeased; now devout, now undevout; now vigorous, now slothful; now gloomy, now merry. But a wise man who is well taught in spiritual labor stands unshaken in all such things, and heeds little what he feels, or from what side the wind of instability blows.”
~Thomas Kempis

We have tried inviting and bringing some of our more traditional friends into the Cursillo and TEC communities because we need their example of *how* to live the faith.  And we have shared our love with the faith and our example of obedience with our Cursillo/TEC communities and our parish family and encourage them that it can be done.  Although we feel "stuck in the middle" of these groups whom we love so dearly, we will continue to be that bridge as we all walk towards our ultimate goal of heaven together.

"Fight the good fight of the faith, take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses."
~2 Timothy 6: 12

++Lord, please help us always keep our focus on You and find that balance between Law and Love.++

Siblings make the best of friends

Two weeks ago today, we had snow on the ground and more ice/snow on the way.   It's hard to believe that we've been enjoying temps in the 50's all week now.  Spring is finally here and we are loving it!  I can barely keep the kids in!!  Other than this little guy - he's staying inside plenty with me.  It's still pretty cool for him to be out.  Plus I like the one-on-one time with him!!!  He is so stinkin' cute and sweet.  He just coo's and goo's and giggles when he sees me.  I guess he loves his momma!  :)

This weekend was another Cursillo renewal weekend in our area.  How blessed I am to be helping chair the kitchen with my 3 sisters and my mom.  I never knew growing up how close we would be to each other as adults.  Siblings truly do make the best of friends.  So do moms (and dads too!).  I can only hope and pray that our own young ones will treasure their siblings and love them as much as I do mine!!

++Thank you, God, for the gift of siblings!!!++

An interview with Christ **my responses**

I am a little late jumping in on this one, but "better late than never", eh?

Dr. Taylor Marshall's podcast and website were introduced to me by my wonderful hubby sometime last year.  He is so easy to relate to and really speaks to me - maybe it's the fact that him and his wife both have seven kids like us, or maybe it's because he is so down-to-earth?  Either way, you gotta give his pod casts a try and read his website too!  You will be encouraged to become a better person striving to live your life for Christ even more!!

This post was from a couple weeks ago and many of the answers just jumped out at me and I wanted to share to remember them for myself, to give YOU an opportunity to think about them and pray and share (in comments or a similar blog post), and also for me to revisit these questions at a later date and re-do.

So here goes.....

"It’s a spiritual interview. It’s a 5 minute check up. Here are the questions that Christ might ask you:
  1. What’s your favorite spiritual book?
  2. Show me one of your spiritual projects? Did you get it going?
  3. Who is your spiritual mentor in life right now? (You have one right now even if you haven’t deliberately chosen one)
  4. What’s the #1 question you have for me? (that is, a question that you have for Christ)
  5. What’s the #1 problem that you need to me (Christ) to solve right at this moment?
  6. What’s the #1 thing that makes you unhappy about being my disciple and friend?
  7. What’s the #1 thing in your life that you want to hide from me?
  8. What is your reaction to me? (example answers: hug, genuflect, high five, roll eyes, turn away, cross arms, cry on my neck)"
My responses....

#1-  the best soul food ever - His Word, the Bible....  Love feeding myself daily with the daily Mass readings and reflections on my Laudete app.  Other spiritual books that stand out immediately....  Always 1000 Gifts, Fr Michael Gaitley's books 33 Days to Morning Glory and Consoling the Heart of Jesus, and my two daily devotionals Small Steps and Catholic Mom's Cafe.

#2- my biggest and most spiritual "projects" are forming, loving and nurturing the hearts and souls of my young'uns.  They are where almost all my time and energy is spent.  Did I get it started?  It was Him who planned and began these projects but it took mine (and Neil's) "yes", openness, trust and faith to do so and perseverance to continue on with this divine assigned project.

#3-  no doubt - my hubby!  He is the one with that most difficult job - to get me to my heavenly home.  So I need to call on him to love and advise me best to get me there, and trust in the sacramental graces of Holy Matrimony.  I also meet with my Cursillo prayer group weekly and these ladies not only listen, pray with and for me, but they also help guide me in my faith when needed as well.

#4-  what can I better do to love and serve you?

#5-  this is a hard one for me!!  Why????!!!!  Isn't this equivalent to "praying for yourself", which has been a process and growth in itself.
For me----> safe pregnancy and delivery of our lil guy.
For others----> that my husband and children can follow and love and serve Christ and be all whom He calls them to.

#6-  being judged/persecuted

#7-  I can't, even if I wanted to and tried. Everything I do and say and think is seen by You, so I better be on my best behavior, eh?

#8-  either running up to You and jumping in your arms -or- falling on my knees and You coming to pick me up??  I can only imagine....

love, Love, LOVE these questions and opportunity for prayer and reflection!!!

Thank you, Taylor Marshall, for the idea!   This was THE best quiz I have taken on the internet ever!  I can see the value in doing this again every few months and I am planning on typing it out and printing for my own kids for our homeschool.

++Thank you, God, for always being so present and alive in my life and drawing me ever closer to You!!!!++

My Daybook: January Edition

FOR TODAY:
Join me today to take a "little look into the day plans and thoughts of those who are focusing on simplicity...beauty of the everyday moments."
http://thesimplewomansdaybook.blogspot.com/

Outside my window...
It is sunny and cold right now, with a temperature of -1 and windchills around -20 and -30 degrees.  Brrrrrr!!

I am thinking...
a lot about Cursillo plans and menu's.  What a huge undertaking my sisters, mother and I have taken on, but a great blessing.  We love to be with each other, we love to cook together, and we love to serve God together - so chairing the kitchen for the next two years just seemed like our next calling together.

I am thankful...
for "closed doors" and "newly opened windows" and how God always take care of us.  Two changes in our lives happening soon!

In the kitchen...
wassail, of course!!!  Great warm drink on a chilly day!  And the smell is amazing!!

I am wearing...
some cutsie slippers that one of my sisters gave me for Christmas, and you kind of see my reflection in the picture above (jeans and a pink thermal shirt!).

I am creating...
my first ever "daybook" post (the post you are reading!!).  I've always admired and enjoyed reading others' daybook posts.  I have now joined the club.

I don't ever want to forget...
*this cute chubby baby
*that I really was once taller than Fone, although for not much longer
*the cute way Pookey talks - soft voice and a growl-like sound sometimes at the end of his sentences (so hard to explain, but the cutest thing ever!)

I am going...
to stay home ALL day where it's warm.

I am wondering...
how to balance being a good wife, a good mom, and a good friend.  I am failing with at least one of these consistently....

I am reading...
The Mysterious Benedict Society as a read-a-loud to the kids (such a great series of books!!!)
33 Days to Morning Glory  for myself, and also attending a weekly retreat meeting on this
....and countless other books that I have started and will someday finish.  In God's perfect timing, right?

I am hoping...
to continue to work on my New Years Resolutions to become the best version of myself.  Have been failing in many areas this past week, and need to step it up a notch.

I am looking forward to...
going to Circa 21 Dinner Playhouse this weekend to celebrate the birthdays of two special ladies in my life - my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law.  They are not only wonderful relatives, but great friends!  How blessed I am to have them in my life!!  The current show is Buddy Holly, and I've heard rave reviews!  Super excited!!

 I am learning...
how to turn to Mary more and trust her with my sacrifices, prayers, and acts of love.  She will present them to her Son in the best and most beautiful way possible.

Around the house...
Rose is walking all over the place and getting into everything. We need to do some more child-proofing - as she puts everything in her mouth.

In the schoolroom....
Full day today at the Young Family Academy even though the public schools are cancelled all around us due to the dangerous wind chills.  This was the third week that our kids took part in a little extra learning outside the house - a sweet mom with 18 years of homeschooling experience is teaching them Latin, Creative Writing, and History once a week.  These were the subjects that I either am clueless on or have no passion for at all.  God provided though with this wonderful opportunity and I'm excited to see where it takes us!

I am pondering...
the sacredness of life and all the little lives around me.  Yesterday was the March for Life, and always a good time to reflect and ponder on where we are in our society, how we got there, and what to do to improve.  Gosh - we definitely have a long way to go when it comes to the value of life.  How blessed I am to be a mom, and to have these little people to keep me focused on what is important - dying to self daily so that they/we can rise together.

A favorite quote for today...
"My dear, dear brothers, our dear little, little mother, the Immaculate Mary, can do anything for us. We are her children. Turn to her. She will overcome everything."
~St. Maximilian Kolbe

One of my favorite things...
walking in and finding the kids playing so nicely with each other - will never tire of this!! Always such a grace-filled moment.

A peek into my day...
Rose "filling and spilling" and Pookey "building a tree" and he let Rose "chop it down".....
