"Take up your cross" - Lenten plans 2014

Tomorrow night, we will be celebrating and feasting at our church's Mardi Gras party (Shrove Tuesday), in preparation for our 40 days to die with our Lord.  So many opportunities to grow closer to him and unite our pains and sufferings to His.  I get SO excited because of the spiritual growth, both personally and as a family.  Here are some links that we will be using this year and also some plans that we've done in the past and will continue this year.

**Crown of Thorns - one of our favorite Lenten activities!!
tutorial and pictures found here

**Lenten devotionals
A Lenten Journey with Jesus Christ and St. Therese of Lisieux
(will be read at breakfast)
Welcome Risen Jesus:  Lent and Easter Reflections for Families
(will be read at lunch)
Amon's Adventure:  A Family Story for Easter
(will be read as a family read-a-loud at bedtime)

**Jesus Tree banner and daily scripture reading

**Stations of the Cross - we'll set our posters around the house to pray as a family (with flashlights in our hands and all the lights turned out - totally sets the mood and the kids LOVE it!) and we'll also go to our church's Stations of the Cross on Wednesday (or when we can make it).  In the above picture, Max is holding a set of Stations with props that I created last year.  I'll try to create a post to share more about that later.

**Thinking about taking part in the Skirting Up Lent Challenge - although I only have a few longer skirts and a couple short skirts. I could do laundry a lot and find some good tights to keep me warm since we are not even close to spring-like weather.  Again, I'm thinking about it - I may even try to wear skirts 3-4 days each week??  That may be more doable!!  ;)

**Lenten audio retreat
audio retreat for each week during Lent - can't wait to start this!!  Maybe with hubby after kids are in bed??

**Busted Halo videos (Lent, Holy Week, Stations of the Cross)

**Holy Heroes Lenten Adventure - daily emails with videos and activities for your children

**Holy Thursday liturgical tea

**Good Friday liturgical tea

**I'm sure the young'uns will build some Lenten Lego's again.

And, as always, these are our plans.  Will we get to everything and finish it off successfully?  That would be nice, but like last year, every day is in God's hands and when things don't go our way, then there is more to offer up and unite with Him.

We have had that same Jesus Tree banner for ages and love it every year. Wishing you and your beautiful family a very blessed Lent :)

We love our Jesus tree too! It's so neat to add a new a new ornament to it every day and see it grow more and more colorful! Such a sweet Lenten tradition. May God bless you with a blessed Lent too!! Thanks for stopping by!!
Thank you for the awesome idea of doing stations at home, in the dark, with flashlights. My kiddos are going to love that....I just have to replace a gazillion flashlight batteries first! Half of my kids are just too young to handle actually going to stations at church, so I am excited to give the flashlight version a try.

Ah - the never ending job of keeping up with working flashlights - too funny! Our kids use them, play with them, hide them, and lose them! The flashlight version has worked great for us for a while. Tonight we are attempting to go to the one at our church as a family. We'll see how that goes. I'm sure I'll much prefer our home version though....
Hi. I'm visiting from the Catholic Bloggers linkup. These are some great ideas. I'm hoping to do Stations with my family this year. We have not made that a tradition in the past.

Thanks for stopping by, Laura! Stations are such a wonderful way to add meaning to Lent - may God bless you as you start that new devotion with your family! :)
WOW the crown of thorns activity is definitely one that I would like to incorporate into our Lenten preparation! Thank you for sharing that; it's amazing how moms are so creative and come up with innovative ways to teach meaningful lessons about the liturgical year to their children. While my kids are 3 and 1, there are limits as to what we can do at this point, but we can do activities like the crown of thorns and the Holy Thursday and Good Friday teas! THANK YOU!

Thanks for your sweet comments and stopping by! The liturgical teas and crown of thorns have been so meaningful for our family! I wish I could claim all the creativity though.... but I had very few original thoughts in my lifetime- hee hee! I just know where to get ideas from and do my best to put them into practice. I guess you could call me a good "copier" - lol! :)
GREAT! Then would you mind sharing where you got the Holy Thursday and Good Friday teas, please? :)
I love your family's ways. We had to pic a few things and stick with them, but I am writing ideas in a file for years to come. Thank you for this treasure trove of information, links and ideas.

Thanks, Maxine, for stopping by! Our oldest is twelve and we've tried adding one new thing each year and sometimes we just stick with "what we've always done". It makes it look like we do a lot, but adding little by little each year makes it more doable. Have a blessed Lent!!
